Provo Canyon School

Student Health

Students who are new to the school are trained and educated on maintaining cleanliness and avoiding the risk of infection. Teachers and therapists are directed to help students in preventing infection. Here are the preventive measures we advise practicing among Provo Canyon School students:

  • The teachers enter a class and pass around a sheet and explain to the class the purpose of the session is to stop infection spread. Personal questions are not allowed during this period.
  • A hand washing video is screened followed by instructions as to the appropriate time of washing hands: before intake of any food item and after, in case of coughing, sneezing, handling trash, after cleaning activities, and after laundry handling.
  • Wearing shoes and socks is compulsory. Shoes that allow passage of air, that is: well-ventilated shoes are preferable, for the same reason cotton socks are welcome. Itching, rashes, red skin and peeled skin are symptoms of affected skin.
  • Sharing clothes and personal items are not advised. Sharing personal belongings can cause infection. Regular medical shampoo usage is advised for head lice. Use a vacuum cleaner for keeping furniture clean. Hot water or hot dryer use can be used to wash clothes and bedding for preventing any lice infection.
  • General hygiene rules include: having daily baths, changing clothing daily, preventive measures against acne.
  • The Tuberculosis test is compulsory unless the student has a certificate proving that a test was recently conducted. Both students and staff are checked once a year.
  • Hepatitis B vaccination is compulsorily provided at Provo Canyon School. Hepatitis C has no vaccination available. Hepatitis B is more infectious than HIV.
  • In case of vomiting or diarrhea, the Provo Canyon School medical staff advises rest and a separate diet. Strict rules are applied during rest, no distractions like TV are allowed.

Students should avoid making up illness requests to avoid certain school activities. The Provo Canyon School has a procedure for reporting illness, which has to be followed by every student
