The school may deny admission :
- If the child requires hospitalization due to a major psychotic condition.
- If the child has an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) below 80 and has major learning problems.
- When a child's physical handicap prevents him/her from active participation in school programs.
- In case of harm caused to the child due to brain injury.
- If there are social problems and pregnancy.
- To children with violent behavior, that causes problems in the school campus.
- To children suffering from severe diabetes, enuresis and food allergies, hemophilia, encopresis and other diseases that may affect the school activities.
Admission Process :
- Information (including hospitalizations, psychological and psychiatric tests) about the potential student is taken from parents, therapists, doctors, and from those whose have previously treated the child.
- The school's Admissions Committee examines the collected information. If the committee finds that the child is unsuitable for the school program, other options will be suggested.
Provo Canyon School Admission Procedure
The process of admission at Provo Canyon School begins with gathering information about the prospective student.
The information is obtained from:
- Parents or guardians
- Therapists
- Physicians
- Counselors
- Psychiatric test results
- Psychological tests
- Previous hospitalization records
- Any other persons who have worked with the child are also contacted.
The admissions department and clinical staff at Provo Canyon review this data. The decision is then made on whether admission is appropriate. Under certain circumstances it may be determined that a student is not appropriate for admission to Provo Canyon School, at which time the family will be notified and other placement options can be discussed. Below is very general profile of the type of students worked with at Provo Canyon School:
- Students are between the ages of 11-17
- Possible Suicidal and/or deliberate self-injurious behavior
- Clinically complex students who have been historically treatment resistant
- Experienced treatment failure in the past.
- Family issues- including, divorce, bereavement, adoption, sibling issues, etc.
- Academic issues
- IQ full scale is higher than 80
- High run risk
- Co-occurring diagnosis
- Axis I diagnosis and Axis II traits such as BPD
- Most common diagnoses are Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Major Depression, Anxiety
- The student may be dealing with chemical dependency issues
- Cases of stealing, damaging property, illegal activities, and truancy from school.
- Consistently under-performing in academics, causing disturbance in the classroom.
Adolescents may be denied admission for the following reasons at Provo Canyon School:
- The IQ or Intelligence Quotient of the child is below 80
- Inability to take part in school program due to brain injury.
- Unable to participate in the school program due to learning issues beyond the scope of Provo Canyon's services.
- Hospitalization required due to severe psychiatric disorder.
- Pregnancy.
- A history of violent behavior that would be disruptive to the Provo Canyon School environment.
- A pathology towards fire-setting
- A pathology towards sexual perpetration
- Social disorders that prevent interaction with others.
- Other factors that may cause denial of admission are hemophilia, epilepsy, severe medical illness and food allergies that may require special diets.
